Ionia Intermediate School District called on Pure and Triangle Construction to plan and build a specialized project that places students with severe cognitive impairments and the incredible staff who support these students at the center of its design.
This facility was thoughtfully crafted to support their unique needs, focusing on creating an environment that fosters self-regulation, respite, and emotional well-being.
The design reflects a deep empathy for the student and staff’s needs. Zoned lighting systems offer adjustable sensory environments, allowing for varied levels of stimulation to promote focus or relaxation depending on the needs of the moment.

Teachers and specialists are offered a wellness room with comfortable seating, daylight access, and privacy to honor the difficult services they administer. The outdoor space, directly accessible from the classrooms, includes a walking track—a quiet, open area where students can step out, breathe, and move freely when they need a break. The L-shaped plan of the building and expansive views of the backyard from each classroom allow for ease of supervision of the exterior from the inside of the building.
It's more than a building—it's a place where independence, wellness, and empowerment come first. We are hopeful this project stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful, compassionate design in transforming the daily lives of the students and staff that use this building.
