Joan Secchia Children’s Rehabilitation Hospital
The Joan Secchia Children’s Rehabilitation Hospital is a joint venture between Mary Free Bed and Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. It will be the only pediatric rehabilitation center in Michigan, a first of its kind.
The project mission is to build a state-of-the-art, freestanding children’s rehabilitation hospital dedicated to helping all kids achieve the best possible outcome through compassionate collaboration, innovation, and interdisciplinary care.
With expansive, two-story therapy gyms along Wealthy Street and a winding outdoor therapy garden, the design takes every opportunity to enhance the rehabilitation experience for children in a unique way. Every space, no matter how formal or informal; big or small; is an opportunity for therapy. The design aims to build excitement around therapy through a community atmosphere where patients and families can heal together through encouraging social interaction.
The new hospital will be three stories connected to the Mary Free Bed campus with a pedestrian bridge spanning over Wealthy St. The 3rd floor will be dedicated to inpatient rooms, specialized therapy gyms, a family resource center, staff support spaces, and classrooms. The 1st and 2nd floors are dedicated to outpatient therapy spaces with specialized therapy gyms, a medical clinic, orthotics & prosthetics, an intensive feeding program, an express café, and an indoor playground.
The design seeks to balance clinical needs with a child-centered environment, ensuring that the hospital is a place of comfort, safety, and hope.
